Curious to hear opinions from those who have done it. Did you like it? What was your average hourly, etc...

Lol, the car having to be newer than 2000-ish and possess 4 doors cuts out a huge portion of us

I did with my 12 MKZ for only a handful of runs. It was neat. The money driving for uber black or whatever the fancy uber is called now was really strong considering the minimal work required, $60 for 15 mins of driving with a rider.
I mostly just wanted to check it out. It was not something I would do regularly and I wouldn’t do it as a standard uber driver because I dislike dealing with drunks.

When I first bought my Subaru I thought to myself “Hey, I love getting lyfts, maybe it would be fun driving for Lyft!”. So I signed up, went and got the inspection and was on my way! I didn’t really want to go sit around bars on Saturday night to take peole home, but I figured I could just turn in on whenever I’m driving somewhere or when I’m bored and not really doing anything at home anyway and if I get one I get one.
I did this a lot. For hours I’d leave it on at home and get nothing. A few times I would get someone while driving by on the freeway, but by the time I got off the exit and was turning around to go get them they’d cancel. I was getting frustrated.
Finally, finally! I got one. YES. I was leaving a cute downtown for reasons I forget and this lady needed a ride. My lucky day! Well, it took forever to find her, first off. Then she got in the back and proceeded to not talk at all while I drove her two miles to her house. The ride cost her 7 dollars. I think I got... like $3.50?
That was it. It never happened again and eventually I lost interest. I never even set up my bank account to receive the 3 dollars I earned haha.
When I signed up a friend got his Subaru like a week after I got mine and hearing about me trying out Lyft, he took my idea and ran with it. Actually buying water bottles to keep in the car and going out hunting on Saturday nights near downtown areas. I think in a month he made like $250. He had a couple of fun stories like a couple of cute girls inviting him inside to smoke him out and such. But on the whole, giving up your Saturdays for 250 a month? Nah.
So I guess TL;DR, you really have to be in a place where lots of people are doing it to make it worth it at all. Everyone I know who does it around here goes up to SF or sits around downtown areas or the airport.

Don’t know anything personally about driving for Uber/Lyft, but I’ve read some articles about how between Uber’s cut of earnings, taxes, gas, insurance, maintenance, and especially vehicle depreciation you actually make less than minimum wage or even lose money when driving for these services. I don’t know anyone who drives so I haven’t actually asked anyone personally about it. You should definitely run the numbers and see if they actually make sense. Don’t use Uber’s estimates for earnings; look on the internet for actual data from drivers.
I do however use Lyft a fair bit and Uber occasionally. Drivers tell me that they on average get friendlier passengers with Lyft but that’s totally anecdotal.

I drove Uber for 1 day. I live in the third largest city in my state. Made $75 in 5 hours on a Saturday night. The people we good for the most part. Much more respectful than I anticipated they would be. However after gas and the miles I put on the car it wasn’t worth the time. Surge pricing rarely happens and when it does it disappears very fast. There are a ton of other drivers on the road in my city. I rarely had a chance to catch my breath between runs but the runs were short and averaged only a couple dollars each. No one tipped.

$15 an hour’s worth of work right there.
